Bhutan popularly known as “Land of the Thunder Dragon” is a tiny land-locked country, kingdom nestling in the Himalayas between its giant neighbors’, India and China. Almost completely cut off for centuries, it only began to open up to outsiders in the 1970s. It has an area of 46,500 Sq. Km. between latitudes 26 45 0 North and 28 10 0 North and between longitudes 88 45 0 east and 92 10 0 east. At its longest east-west dimension, Bhutan stretches around 300 kilometers and it measures 170 kilometer at its maximum north-south dimension. Bhutan shares about 1075 km of land boundaries with its neighbors’ – China 470 km, India 605 km.

Bhutan’s population in 2000 was 677,934 according to the Yearbook released by the Central Statistical Organization of the Royal Government of Bhutan in March 2002. Approximately 125,000 Bhutanese refugees are living in Nepal and India.
