Trip Overview
Sikles is a newly explored trekking route in the northeast of Pokhara Valley overlooking Annapurna IV, Annapurna II, Lamjung Himal, and the Manaslu range. It passes through terraced fields, lush green forests, and high alpine meadows and traverses a variety of terrain from low land to blooming forests of rhododendrons. The region is a real paradise for bird watchers where different species of birds live. This trek offers an enchanting village experience as trekkers can observe the well-preserved traditional Gurung culture, lifestyle of Gurung people, and their handicraft production. Ancient water-driven flour mills and the local cloth weaving epitomize the socio-economic situation and geo-political situation of the Gurung people living in this community where Jhankri (shaman) and Lama (priest) have important roles in day-to-day life. This is the best trek to explore the natural beauty, culture, and lifestyle of the indigenous Gurung people of Nepal. A noted Gurung tradition is the institution of Rodhi where teenagers form fictive kinship bonds and become Rodhi members to socialize, perform communal tasks, and find marriage partners. Centuries of cultural influence from Tibet which adopted the Tibetan culture to a heavy extent resulted in many Gurungs gradually embracing Tibetan Buddhism.
