Trip Overview
The Langtang valley, also known as ‘the valley of glaciers’, is physically made up of pine forest, varieties of rhododendron, mountain streams, rugged rock, bamboo forests, majestic waterfalls, snow-capped Himalaya and wildflowers. Commencing an overland journey either to Sundarijal or to Dunche, the main trading post of the area, and hiking up through this beautiful alpine valley to Kyangjin we reach the sacred lakes of Gosainkund, Over the years this Gosainkunda has become one of the sacred pilgrimage sites for shamans, the traditional witch doctors, as well as many Hindus and Buddhist devotees. Trekking through the high scenic area of Laurebina pass, and crossing a small ridge gets the fantastic first view of the holy lake. There are a dozen lakes in the Gosainkunda Basin: the main three being Saraswatikunda, Bhairabkunda, and Gosainkunda. While walking through this unique region trekkers can enjoy serene Buddhist monasteries and settlements, glaciers, and mountain lakes along with an old cheese factory. The colorful villages allow you to sense how the locals live their lives in this territory!!! The dramatic views from Himal Chuli (7893m) Manaslu (8156mm) Ganesh Himal (7406m) to Annapurna range on a clear day are the highlights of this trekking although the valley is dominated by Langtang Lirung [7246m], the highest peak in the area. Despite being close to Kathmandu, the Langtang Region is as wild as any Tibetan highlands with an idyllic rural landscape. The people living in the highlands of the Langtang are descendants of Tibetan origin, influenced by the Tibetan lifestyle.
